Eduzgraf Cinema

Eduzgraf film programme is curated in collaboration with 25 FPS Audiovisual Research Association and selected by Sanja Grbin, Marina Kožul (25 FPS) and Mihaela Richter (Eduzgraf). For 12 years, 25 FPS has been screening films in the form of a festival as a catalyst of visual and social changes. Zgraf, on the other hand, as an international graphic design and visual communications exhibition, for 12 editions gathers students, designers, theoreticians and critics with the intention of exploring design as an equally powerful tool.

The film programme includes 15 visually powerful and socially engaged films, whose content conceptually relates to the Zgraf 12 umbrella theme, Social Reruns. The programme is divided into four sections: Social Nostalgia?, Visual Reflections, Living with Modernism and Social Reruns.

Thematically, the focus is on the relationship with the cultural heritage of socialism, spatial and temporal memory, views on collective war traumas and fight for social rights. The special chapter Visual Reflections deals with creative experimental processes of visual narrative.

Each of the films directly leans on the design works exhibited at Zgraf 12’s Review and Theme. The line-up consist of works primarily directed by Croatian directors, to shed light with this particular selection on how our national production copes with delicate, problematic and important issues of Social Reruns.

The line-up focuses on and raises awareness about the important socio-political issues, as well as the necessity of neverending creative/experimental rerunning and reinterpreting within the boundaries of the visual language of graphic design and film.

25 FPS Audiovisual Research Association exists since 2004 and focuses on short film, publishing, education in the field of new media and film culture. Its most important project is 25 FPS Festival, the international experimental and art film festival. 25 FPS Festival screens independent and non-commercial films which innovatively explore the possibilities of film language, narrative and the medium itself, cross the borders of film genres, and stimulate understanding of film as art. The festival promotes expressive creative concepts, thematic, conceptual and aesthetic breakthroughs and works perpetuating the tradition of avant-garde and experimental film.

The rules of correct behaviour found in books of etiquette present themselves as aiding communication and helping people understand each other. They also claim to help us engage socially with greater ease and self confidence. These rules are learnt from birth which is the only way for us to completely internalise them. Their model is found in western civilizations, and compliance with them makes it easy to discern who is civilised and who is not. The film deals with customs of eating and drinking – specifically with the lunch situation, as communal eating is the central site of showing others our breeding and finesse.

If the new world ever existed, it is still hidden way behind the horizon. An analogue clock is ticking away the last seconds before world crisis, while a noble patina covers fragments for archaeologists of memory. A silent relief in between two wars; a time of diffident bodies, of melancholy leisure, of secret divisions of the world.Archive photos from an illustrated entertainment magazine of 1929 as the basis for his experimental-animated film, thus creating an associative, yet disturbing “film journal”.

Among the ruins of the cinema of my childhood, I found the remains of a film tape with pieces of films produced by the former state. Decay gave the tape a new quality and created a new aesthetic. The tape has found its way to its audience again. But nothing is the same.

Moving Elements focuses on the creative processes that lead to making art. A car passes through all the stages of creative art process and becomes part of art works, as well as a player in abstract processes of creating. The film is meant as a tribute to filmmakers and films made in the golden age of the Zagreb School of Animation. To a certain extent it uses a visual language characteristic of the period – the 1960s and the 1970s.

Dota is an exploration in sound and vision which combines traditionally animated stop motion line play with a female voice. The lines appear, disappear and interact just like threads in a fabric, create and dissolve embroidery. The lines compose the visual part of the fabric, against the audio backdrop of a voice and a song. The film’s title describes the local tradition of a dowry, objects and belongings prepared for a girl, often woven or embroidered fabrics, she brings into her new family after marriage.

Here There gives graphic form to memory’s malleable, straying lines. It begins as a traveler’s sketchbook, drawn in Croatia in the summer of 2014, but details soon fade away into abstract impressions on the edges of memory. This film is a reduction to the essence, a condensed feeling of one place and time.

Pain is slowed down in slow motion up to the sensitivity threshold and is sold as an everyday anesthetic. We browse through ready-made catalogues of horror, instructions for use, we order attractive ideas-images; we wish to leave our bodies and become that image for a change. Watching a film, we forget about ourselves pretending not to be interested in the content; in fact, we are interested in the hypnotising, pulsating light, which is when we discover our magical and tribal conscience and repressed fear of life.

Documentary series about modern architecture of the former Yugoslavia – from the times of utopian building for better society. Documentary series Slumbering Concrete erects its narrative around modern architecture in Croatia and regions of the former Yugoslavia – an area distinguished by large number of vacated and ruinous buildings from 20th century that are of immense architectural significance. The series is composed of 4 thematic chapters, of which the first is dedicated to architecture of tourism purposes, second to monuments and commemorative buildings, third to post-industrial and post-military landscapes and fourth to great ambitions of unfinished modernizations. Every chapter contains 4 episodes. Every episode is a dramatic story about contradictions of Yugoslav socialist society settled between East and West, democracy and totalitarianism – saturated with utopian idea that the architecture has the ability to make our world a better place. In the episode Short Encounters Along the Adriatic Coast, we travel along the Adriatic motorway, the road that brought dramatic changes to coastal life and became part of many tourists’ collective memory. We stop at motels, short-term stay locations, with a special focus on those designed by Ivan Vitić. Their elegant and modern architecture is today in many ways left to decay.

By using innovative editing techniques partially based on a computer algorhythm, the film traces 50 years of urban development of a Zagreb. The heritage of modernism and utopian urbanism are placed in today’s context marked by transition and lack of urban planning.

All Still Orbit links together two apparently unrelated moments in the construction of Brasília: the dream by an Italian saint used to justify its creation and a small city built by the workers constructing the new capital to house them and their families. How do you make sense of a city built on a dream? Are all dreams made equal? Sometimes a documentary can feel like a fairy tale.

A look at life on the mediterranean borders of Europe, where tourists try to relax while “illegal” immigrants struggle for a chance to a better life. Breaking out of a strictly confined tourist zone, two children of a Swiss family experience quickly that reality here has very little to do with the posh life in the camping site. Then a storm hits the shore and washes away almost all distinctions between rich and poor.

Being in the right place at the right time has always been a mark of a good documentary filmmaker. However, what distinguishes a brilliant filmmaker from a mere chronicler is the way they shape the filmed material into a coherent cinematic whole. In his film The Verdict, Đuro Gavran films the crowd, decorated with nationalist symbols, gathering in Zagreb’s main square to see the live broadcast of the trial to Croatian generals in The Hague. In a Diane Arbus manner, Gavran manages to capture the almost grotesque moment when the faces of individuals at the moment of sentencing change from euphoria to teary-eyed disappointment. Still, the formal precision of this film’s making and editing makes it possible to take a dignified distance from the protagonists and gives us food for thought about the real motifs that stimulate these people to use nationalist iconography as compensation for their sorrow, trauma or disappointment.

Imagine joint demonstrations of students and farmers! Such an improbable encounter happened on the Feast of Corpus Christi in 2009 on Vukovarska street in Zagreb, when students from Faculty of Social Sciences came to support the farmers’ demonstrations in front of the building of Ministry of Agriculture. In spite of the fact that this event was present in all the media, this film is the only video recording of this unusual one-day encounter of students and farmers. Euphoric student night and sobering farmers’ day; media-conscious activism and heavy machines on the streets; plenary form of organization and quarrelling farmers’ associations – these are just some of the manifestations of this unexpected alliance.

Film was created like part of WP4 (“arTVision movies”: executive production of arTVision audiovisual products made by professional filmmakers) project arTVision – a live art channel founded program IPA ADRIATIC CBC 2007/2013, prodaction Filmaktiv and PGŽ.
